Is a Honda still a Honda with a Mazda motor? Roofing systems reviewed by Total Roofing

Every project is different! Whether it’s the location of the property, design of the home, color of exterior facade (brick, siding, cedar), or the homeowner’s intentions. The benefits of being in business for 30 years is knowing that ALL client’s are as unique as their projects ;).  These two reasons alone are why we offer different roofing systems instead of utilizing a single manufacturer (what happens if there’s a recall?).

The benefit’s of our multi-verse manufacturer relationships and product awareness positions us to educate/advise you to make the best decision. We understand it’s not your duty to read shingle reviews, industry trends, or be cognitive of breakthrough innovation, because that’s our job. So, we went ahead and featured our top 3 roofing systems that we suggest and are common for our clients throughout the Chicagoland area/ Northwest Indiana.

1. The most complete roofing system:

GAF Timberline Golden Pledge roofing system: $$

The benefit’s of the “golden pledge” system is its durability, entire system warranty, and being created by GAF’s who happens to be one of the largest producer of roofing product’s in North America.  GAF’s research and development have not only created an industry leading asphalt shingle (1st line of watershed defense), but innovative, top of the market accessories to compliment the system. This roofing system comes with a 50-year non-prorated product warranty, 25- year workmanship warranty, and GAF will complete a review of the installation. The best part only 2% of contractor’s in North America can offer such a warranty.

  • GAF Timberline Shingles
  • GAF Weatherwatch (Ice & Water shield)
  • GAF Deck Armor (Synthetic underlayment with permeability ratings)
  • GAF Starter course, GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent, GAF Cobra intake system
  • GAF Timbertex Ridge Caps (Heavy duty ridge caps)

2. A windy location, farm lot roofing system

Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration roofing system: $$

We love the OC Duration shingle because of the Surenail technology (OC Patented) that’s been incorporated within the main component: the asphalt shingle. The Surenail technology strip (show in the photo) reinforces the roofing nails & strengthens the bonding agent by its fabric woven technology.  The 130 mph wind rating with a 6 nail installation is why we recommend this for farm houses, 12/12 pitches, mansard roofs, or properties that are located near wind tunnels. Similar to GAF, Owens Corning offers a full line of accessories that are quality and efficient formulating a cohesive roofing system.Surenail technology.png

What’s in a system?:

  • Owens Corning TruDuration Shingles
  • Owens Corning ProArmor Synthetic Underlayment
  • Owens Corning Weatherlock (Ice & Water shield)
  • Owens Corning ridge ventilation, starter course
  • Owens Corning ProEdge ridge caps

3. Color’s & Transparency

TAMKO Heritage Architectural System: $

What does TAMKO mean? Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. This manufacturer is located in Joplin, Missouri. We love this manufacturers color options and product transparency with their 30 year product warranty. It’s uncommon to constantly review your roof’s color, unless you strongly dislike the existing one. The benefit of this manufacturer is the well versed color schematics and varying colors from competitors. We thoroughly enjoy this company for not following the industry trend of “lifetime warranties” and standing by their 30 year warranty mark. This shingle has  a 15-year non-prorated product warranty with depreciating after 30 years (which is still a strong warranty).

What’s in a system?

  • TAMKO Heritage architectural shinglesTAMKO pro
  • TAMKO Heritage starter course
  • TAMKO Ice & Water and underlayment
  • TAMKO ridge caps.

2017: Total Roofing TAMKO Heritage: 50 properties with 0 complaints

Other roofing system & product’s we install: Owens Corning Oakridge, CertainTeed Landmark Pro’s, IKO cambridge, and Atlas Pinnacle. These product’s all have a time and place. For instance, we will install a number of Atlas Pinnacle in treed lots or near lakes because of their formulated copper granules technology, which deters algae, life organism’s from growing on the shingles (That yucky green moss!)

Our final notes: Keep in mind every contractor offers a varying level of accessories (#15 lb felt – STOP IT ALREADY), but we listed the above system components you should REQUEST INFORMATION ON. Yes, a complete manufacturer systems tend to cost more than a piece by piece system, but trust the manufacturer’s suggestion. They advertise those warranties when you utilize their components, because do you think a Honda would really be a Honda with a Mazda motor?

The last bit of advice,is that these systems are only as good as their installer’s. Do NOT SPEND THE MONEY on these top products if you’re getting a below the industry standard “workmanship warranty” on the installation (Anything less than 3 years is concerning). An analogy would be like buying a Corvette Stingray and not using premium fuel or synthetic oil. That beautiful vehicle will be breaking down much sooner than your monthly payments!

I hope this article may help you or provide some insight,

Phillip Cooper

Advertising in the roofing industry? TRC hires new advertising guru

Recently, it’s been brought to our attention that a roofing commercial has crossed the line of no return. This commerical combines the influence of the adult industry along with the daily job of a roofing salesman (one second of the video and you’ll understand). We’ve seen the commercial and as a roofer we agree it’s pretty funny, but as a business we want to know what this company was thinking. Thank goodness for children this company decided to toss the idea out last-minute. We’ll never know the commericals success or whether BBF roofing really fixed the roof. However as outlandish this video appears it brought up an excellent topic.                     Advertising in the roofing industry.

We’d love to tag the video link, but it’s slightly inappropiate. If curious type on Youtube “roofing commericals” and it’ll be BBF Roofing Commercial.

It appears our industry deters companies from differentiating their advertising method’s from competitors. It’s almost applauded to follow competitors and continue traditional methods such as direct-mail outs, billboards, radio segments, door-2-door, booths, and sponsorships. These forms still work or else no one would actively pursue them.  Yet, after years of monitoring the industry it seems each competitor stick to the same things, but with a different font. We don’t believe choosing italics over bold will double your ROI with that mail-out, but they might (says company marketer). The more our marketplace is defined by these age-old tactics the more we realize this crazy commercial may solve a lingering issue.

Yourr wife is hot

Some believe successful advertising is making people talk about your product even if its bad publicity hence Miley Cyrus’s latest antics. As many family business know its difficult to compete with organizations that steep to outlandish tactic’s to draw consumers. So after years of fighting the current we’re finally jumping on board. It’s official that Total Roofing & Construction will be adding their first pond in this unorthodox game.  We will be announcing the hiring of Green Man to Total Roofing & Construction team. Upon a thorough interview process we believe its in the best interest of the company. Distinguished himself and blew away his competitors during the Q &A process. He was extremely charismatic, appeared humble, & held tremendous eye-contact. We hope to upload his interview after he consent’s to it. It’s the best interview our panel has  witnessed first-hand and believe he’ll help our organization grow not only in the green direction, but also the right one.

This means we’re going to avoid making artificial claims such as giving a free roof away (read the fine print here), hire models to work our booths (statistically this does work), or as BBF roofing showed make adult-oriented commercials (which may actually have hit their target market). We believe roofing advertising will begin changing drastically, but in today’s world you either jump on board or sink.

Why Pinterest is your next home improvement best friend.

Yes, you have friends, that handyman neighbor, or  know someone who possesses every possible tool (just in case something happens, but it often never does).  Every person living in a subdivision understands the value of these helpful neighbors; whether helping assemble a shed, re-shingle your roof, or join for that cold brew after an exhausting day. Face it these friends make life easier for the entire house. Maybe you’re not a DIYer and you prefer a licensed professional doing it. Whether you enjoy doing it yourself or handing matters over, you should always have complete control on your house improvement.

PInterest Logo

We believe it’s your house so don’t have neighbor’s or contractors making the decisions and trust your own gut. Every homeowner generally has an idea of what they’re looking for, but  lack creative punch. It’s easy to aisle shop at Menard’s or Home Depot to solve your need. This process drown’s creativity and hides your houses desire to stand out. Home improvement start’s with an idea and that’s where Pinterest comes in.

Before we discuss what Pinterest brings to the table, we understand not everyone has a Pinterest account or is tech savvy.  The politically correct word for these people is digital immigrant’s. It’s someone new to technologies such as the internet, laptops, or lack tech knowledge. Generally these are grandparents or people over sixty. There’s older people whom stay current with the tech times and not every young adult is tech savvy themselves. We bring this up because now Generation Y is beginning to enter the housing market. Generation Y is the title given to people born after the 80’s and early 2000’s. It’s believed that 97% of this generation either owns a laptop or computer device. This generation will utilize electronic devices and programs when making a household decision.

This generation feels comfortable navigating the internet as well as incorporating it in their daily lives. They’ll research daily tasks online or consult that handy neighbor, whereas generation Y (baby boomer’s) use the yellow pages as well as that trusted neighbor. So what can a social media platform with 3 years of experience (started in 2010) bring to the table compared to next door Chuck’s 40 years of plumbing experience down the street? The title is home improvement not home upkeep. Chuck’s plumbing experience is useful when seeking the latest plumbing for a newly refurbished kitchen/bathroom.   The house timeline remains constant for upkeep purposes like electrical work, water, roof, windows, and air conditioning. Yes we love solving common issues that plague every homeowner, but you’re trying to improve your house. Upgrading shingles, siding, windows, or gutters are ways to help increase value as well protect your investment. Maybe you want to improve your house by becoming more eco-friendly, incorporating designer sinks, or creating your own office. Before drastic decisions ask yourself what you want. Below is few bizarre questions to ask yourself.

Did you want that pirate ship tree house?

Maybe you wanted to paint your house in zebra stripes?

Grass on Roof

Can you grow grass on the roof?

These questions seem childish, but who better to consult for creativity then a child? Creative thinking allows you to differentiate your house from the next-door replica, make it your own, and inject color. We’re not requesting neighborly competition (that already happens) or paint a Van Gogh on your exterior siding. The neat thing about Pinterest is it’s free and allows you to pin your favorite projects/activities.

Often home improvement is the last household decision due to the finances, but this site provides cost-effective ways to target your wants. We believe Chuck could help you think abstract or build a cornhole set worth bragging about, but Pinterest allows you to view thousands of ideas in the matter of a click. The famous Marie Curie said “Be less curious about people and more about ideas.” Marie Curie might be a Nobel Prize winning physicist yet she understood something about thinking outside the box.

Pinterest provides you an escape from the traditional house style or bland colors. We are not requesting you to build a replica of the Solider Field space ship on your house, merely enjoy the improvement process and love the finished product. If sticking with the household status quo pleases you Pinterest most certainly will frighten you.  Remain aware of protecting the longevity of your asset as well. If you trust your gut you’ll make the best decision to satisfy your want. One Pinterest page has an entire board dedicated to houses that resemble the fable of the “old lady who lives in a shoe.”  Living in a shoe style house may not appeal to you, but maybe living in an entirely eco-friendly house does.

House in a shoe

We promise that you’ll find one intriguing picture or idea that you try emulating yourself.  These ideas range from picture frames, baskets, or wall painting techniques. If your house is in dire need of a little interior design injection please check out this site. Various ideas range from low to high-end of the price  scale. Finding something to improve that hideous room or make you the talk of the subdivision lies in Pinterest. Maybe Chuck’s innovative cornhole paint job does interest you, but there’s no way it’ll trump the swimming pool in your dining room.
